Time Warner Plans to Introduce New Dual Format DVD DiscAuthored by Jay Baage on January 4, 2007 - 1:54pm.
New York - Warner Brothers (WB), a division of Time Warner, plans to formally announce a new dual format DVD disc, called Total HD, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Tuesday, reports The New York Times. The new videodisc can play movies and television programs in both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats, the two competing DVD technologies.
WB is expecting that the new disc will make the decision to switch to the new generation of high-definition DVD players less daunting for consumers, as it would minimize the fallout of a format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, reminiscent of Betamax versus VHS. Retail and media executives believe that competing formats are impeding consumer adoption, due to confusion and fear of incompatibility to consumers.
