2006 U.S. Music Sales Top $1 Billion; Song Downloads Pass 580 Million

New York - U.S. music sales topped $1 billion again in 2006, while digital track sales totaled 581.9 million, up 65% from 2005, according to sales data from Nielsen SoundScan.

Sales of digital albums shot up over 100%, to 32.6 million; the number of digital albums sold eclipsed even the number of physical CDs purchased online, which totaled 29.4 million in 2006, up 19% from 2005.

The top-selling digital song of 2006 was Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" (2.01 million units), followed by Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" (1.71 million); Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback" (1.66 million); and "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley (1.63 million).

The top-selling digital albums of the year were Fray's "How to Save a Life" (198,731 units); John Mayer's "Continuum" (176,522); and Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/Love Songs" (141,809).
