Reston, Va. - Online retail spending broke the $100 billion mark for the first time in 2006, with nearly a quarter of that occurring in the final two months of the year, according to a new report from comScore Networks.

The firm said that consumers spent $102.1 billion online (excluding travel), an increase of 24% from 2005. About $24.6 billion of that came during November and December.

"2006 was certainly an exceptional year for online retailers," said Gian Fulgoni, the chairman of comScore Networks. "The online holiday shopping season of course played a vital role in the year's success, as spending accelerated during the final two months of the year, helping push total online retail spending over the $100 billion threshold."
