CES: Powercast, a Wireless Power Provider, Wins CNet Award for Best Emerging Technology

Las Vegas - Powercast won the CNet "Best of CES 2007" award today in the Emerging Technologies category.  The start-up, whose product will be released around the end of 2007, believes it has solved the problem of battery life that negatively affects nearly all consumer electronics products today.

Powercast operates on radio frequencies, storing power in a way that doesn't simply replace battery chargers, it eliminates the need for them, providing a device a continuous charge.  A Powercast transmitter, which works over a small area, can be placed on anything plugged into a wall.  It then sends out a low radio frequency signal and anything with (for now) AA or AAA batteries in its range, and containing a Powercast receiver - approximately the size of a finger nail - is charged.

"Our solution is, if talk time (on a cell phone) is 5 1/2 hours, by trickle-charging (it) at work, now talk time is 10 hours because the battery never gets to dead," said Powercast CEO John Shearer.

The key for Powercast's development will be convincing CE and IT manufacturers to build Powercast capability in their products.  As of now, Powercast is only publicly acknowledging a future relationship with Philips.
