New York - The developers behind the Kazaa file-sharing service and Skype Internet telephone service on Tuesday launched beta testing for Joost, their new online TV service.

Previously code-named The Venice Project by co-founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, Joost will offer "piracy-proof" online video delivery that utilizes peer-to-peer streaming technology. The broadband service will be free for users, who will view ads alongside video content.

"People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience, while the entertainment industry needs to retain control over their content," said Joost CEO Fredrik de Wahl. "With Joost, we've married that consumer desire with the industry's interests."

De Wahl told the Associated Press that Joost has already signed content deals with Warner Music, September Films and Endemol NV, among others. Zennstrom and Friis sold Skype to eBay in 2005 for $2.6 billion.

I cannot say that I'm surprised...

with what these guys have put together. A unified platform focused on user experience and user desire will always be the focus of a successful venture. Also looking at the trends in online video and social media, I'm very excited to see a how this takes shape.
