Scholastic Corporation, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, announced on Wednesday that Maureen O’Connell will become Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer, effective January 22, 2007. In this newly created role, O’Connell will direct the company’s administrative functions, including Finance, Global Operations and IT, Human Resources, Strategic Planning and Business Development, and Legal. Most recently, O’Connell was CFO of Affinion Group, a $1.3 billion direct marketing firm. She will report to Scholastic Chairman, President and CEO, Richard Robinson. Scholastic also announced that Mary Winston, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and Peter Watts, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, are resigning from the company. A company spokeswoman told The Times that 172 layoffs will come on the editorial side -- representing 5% of the company's total editorial staff -- while another 117 employees on the business side (2.6% of total staff) will lose their jobs. [more…] www.time.com Samsung Electronics announced this week the appointment of H B Lee as the regional President and CEO of South West Asia, including India and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries. Lee will assume this role in February and oversee the Indian operations of all Samsung subsidiaries such as Samsung India Electronics, Samsung Telecommunications India, Samsung India Software Operations (SISO) and the company’s R&D center in Banagalore. Lee will be based in Delhi. Prior, Lee was President and CEO of Samsung’s digital appliance network business.
