Los Angeles - News Corp.'s online social network MySpace announced on Monday that it has filed suit against a number of spammers for posting millions of spam "bulletins" to MySpace users' accounts.

Filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, under federal laws including the CAN-SPAM Act and California's anti-spam statute, the lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction barring Scott Richter and others from MySpace, in addition to unspecified monetary damages.

"We're committed to protecting our community from phishing and spam," said MySpace chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam. "If it takes filing a federal suit to stop someone who violates the law and damages our members' experience, then that's what we'll do."

MySpace noted that Richter was previously sued for spamming by Microsoft and then-N.Y Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Richter agreed in a settlement with Microsoft to pay $7 million in damages and make "fundamental changes" to his e-mail practices.
