Irvine, Calif. - Vivendi's Blizzard Entertainment game publishing unit announced on Tuesday that "World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade," the first expansion to its massively multiplayer online game, broke the day-one sales record to become the fastest-selling PC game ever in North America and Europe.

Based on internal company records and reports from key distribution partners, the game sold nearly 2.4 million copies on Jan. 16, when it went on sale simultaneously in North America, Europe and parts of Asia.

Nearly 1.2 million copies were sold in North America. Blizzard added that by the end of the game's first day on sale, more than 1.7 million players had gone online to upgrade their accounts for the expansion pack.

The original "World of Warcraft" online game claims more than 8 million paying subscribers.
