Newbury, England - A group of big names in the wireless industry, including Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone, have come together to form the LiMo Foundation, a non-profit that will work to jointly develop a Linux-based mobile platform.

Other charter members of the group include Panasonic Mobile Communications and Samsung Electronics.

The LiMo Foundation will be headed by chairman Greg Besio, of Motorola and vice chair Kiyohito Nagata, of NTT DoCoMo.

The group also said it is seeking new members interested in participating in the development of a set of APIs and architecture, and contributing source code for the common components of the Linux-based mobile platform.
