New York - Viacom's Nickelodeon children's cable TV network announced on Tuesday the launch of Nicktropolis, a virtual world for kids.

The site allows kids to create their own personalized 3D avatars and 3D rooms, interact with other kids or Nickelodeon characters in real time, watch videos, play games and explore the Nickelodeon-branded environment.

"Virtual worlds like Nicktropolis are part of our strategy to bring immersive, relevant entertainment experiences to our audiences wherever they are, and to build communities around our content across every kind of platform," said MTV Networks chairman and CEO Judy McGrath.

Safety features on the site include anonymous registration -- which prevents kids from divulging personal information -- and options for parents to control chat and security settings for their children.

Viacom's MTV Networks said its network of sites serving preschoolers, kids, teens and parents -- which includes Nick.com, Neopets, Noggin.com and Shockwave.com -- counted over 25 million unique users in December, according to comScore.
