Ads for Blog Network Gawker Appear in Copyrighted YouTube Videos

San Francisco - A YouTube user associated with the blog network Gawker Media (Gawker, Defamer, Gizmodo, Valleywag) has posted dozens of copyrighted videos to the video-sharing site that feature appended ads for Gawker blogs, CNET News.com reported on Friday.

The ads for Gawker blogs including Gizmodo and Valleywag were added to clips from ABC's "The View," Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," Web TV show "Rocketboom" and WNYW Channel 5, a New York-based Fox affiliate, among others.

"I can tell you emphatically that this video was used without our authorization," Audrey Pass, spokesperson for WNYW, told News.com. "We have plans to pursue this matter further."

When asked by News.com whether the YouTube user who posted the clips -- known as "Belowtheradar" on the site -- was associated with Gawker, CEO Nick Denton confirmed the link: "He's our video guy."

News.com also reported that Gawker would seem to have been aware of the ads, as several of the YouTube clips were displayed on the company's own blogs.

Gawker/YouTube

Oh, they were definitely aware. Nick Denton seems to have admitted it (in the "update" here):
Youtube User belowtheradar is Richard Blakeley of Gawker Media

Also, this is going to get more common. I've read some commentary that this is going to be a pretty hard type of guerilla advertising to stop:
