Cambridge, Mass. - Akamai, a provider of Internet content delivery network services, has agreed to pay about 3.2 million in Akamai stock to acquire Netli, a California-based provider of technology for accelerating applications and content over the Internet.

At Friday's closing price, the stock deal is worth about $178 million.

The world's three biggest mobile phone suppliers, the largest technology reseller, the largest beauty products company, the two largest computer manufacturers, and the top two import auto manufacturers use Netli for their application acceleration and content delivery needs, the company said in a press release on Monday.

Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai said that by combining its services with Netli's it intends to address two important market segments identified by industry analysts -- application delivery controllers and wide area network (WAN) optimization controllers.
