Englewood Cliffs, N.J. - Korea's LG Electronics on Monday began selling the industry's first dual-format, high-definition DVD player in the U.S.

The $1,200 Super Multi Blue Player (BH100), which plays both Blu-ray and HD DVD next-generation discs, went on sale at retailers including Best Buy, Circuit City and CompUSA.

Best Buy's website had sold out of its delivery stock before noon on the West Coast; CircuitCity.com and CompUSA.com were both still fulfilling online orders.

LG did not say how many units it shipped to the U.S. for the product's launch.

"We are proud to offer consumers the next generation of HDTV innovation, addressing consumer hesitancy and confusion, and we're excited that the LG player has captured the attention of retail partners and enthusiasts," said Michael Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics North American Headquarters.
