Nintendo Wii Outsold PlayStation 3 Three-to-One in Japan Last Month

Tokyo - Nintendo's Wii video game console sold nearly three times as many units in Japan last month as did rival Sony's PlayStation 3 console, Reuters reported, citing data from Japanese game magazine publisher Enterbrain.

The Wii sold 405,000 units in Japan in January, while the PlayStation 3 sold 148,000 units; overall, Nintendo has sold 1.4 million Wii consoles in Japan, compared with 614,000 PlayStation 3 units sold to date by Sony.

Enterbrain cited the Wii console's lower price and greater range of games for its early success.

"There could be a price cut for the PS3 by the end of the year, and more software titles will hit the market. I expect the PS3 to be doing better after awhile," Enterbrain president Hirokazu Hamamura told Reuters. "Of course, the Wii will keep running ahead all the while."

America's Trend

The same thing is happening in America. It will be interesting to see now if PS3 outsells the Wii since bluray is winning the format war.
