YouTube to Post Copyright Warnings on Japanese Site

Tokyo - Google's YouTube video-sharing service has agreed to post warnings on the Japanese version of its website that ask users not to upload copyrighted materials, Japanese media firms said Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) in October asked YouTube to remove 30,000 of its members' copyrighted clips.

YouTube complied, and in December JASRAC followed-up with a letter asking YouTube to implement a copyright filtering system.

YouTube executives traveled to Japan to meet with representatives of JASRAC and other copyright groups recently.

One solution YouTube has reached with other copyright holders, such as NBC Universal and Warner Music Group, is an agreement allowing users to post copyrighted clips, with copyright holders receiving compensation from YouTube.

"We didn't reach that level of discussion today, but it would be ideal if we could eventually shake hands and form a deal" with YouTube, Hideki Matsutake, a representative of Japan's Council of Performers' Organizations, told Reuters.
