Austin, Texas - Gamecock Media Group on Monday announced its launch as an independent publisher that will help finance and release titles from smaller game developers.

The Austin-based company was founded by former executives from Gathering of Developers, which was sold in 1999 to Take-Two Interactive.

"Most of the big publishers are publicly held, and Wall Street wants you to own trucks and have a floor of accountants and grow by a certain amount every year," Gamecock CEO Mike Wilson told The New York Times.

Gamecock will help finance game titles, and allow developers to retain intellectual property rights to their creations.

The company is already working with developers on five titles -- including "Hail to the Chimp" and "Insecticide" -- for release in 2008.
