EchoStar Invests $40 Million in Korean Satellite-based Mobile TV Firm TU

Englewood, Colo. - Satellite TV provider EchoStar Communications announced on Wednesday that its Asian subsidiary has made a $40 million investment in South Korea's TU Media Corp., the operator of a satellite-based mobile TV service.

The investment makes EchoStar the second-largest shareholder in TU Media, behind Korean wireless carrier SK Telecom.

Since launching in May 2005, TU Media has signed up more than one million subscribers to its service, uses the S-DMB (satellite digital multimedia broadcasting) standard.

The service currently offers 15 video and 19 audio channels.

"Linked together, TU Media Corp., SK Telecom, and EchoStar can accelerate the adoption of mobile video," said EchoStar International president Steve Schaver.
