Report: Nintendo Wii Leads U.S. Game Console Sales in January

San Francisco - Nintendo's Wii was the top-selling video game console in the U.S. in January, followed by Sony's PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing sales data from market research firm NPD Group.

The Wii sold 436,000 units during the month, compared with sales of 299,000 of Sony's older PlayStation 2 console, 294,000 Xbox 360s and 244,000 PlayStation 3s.

Overall, video game hardware and software sales in January totaled $1.3 billion.

Game sales totaled $549 million for the month. Leading the pack was Capcom's "Lost Planet: Extreme Condition," followed by Activision's "Guitar Hero 2," Microsoft's "Gears of War" and Nintendo's "WarioWare: Smooth Moves" and "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess."
