Cisco, Apple Reach Settlement Over iPhone Trademark

San Jose, Calif. - Networking equipment maker Cisco Systems and Apple announced late Wednesday that they have resolved their dispute over the "iPhone" trademark, with both companies free to use the trademark on their products worldwide.

Cisco filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Apple six weeks ago, following Apple's unveiling of its forthcoming iPhone multimedia communications device at the Macworld convention in San Francisco.

Cisco claimed in its suit that it has owned the iPhone trademark since 2000, and used it for a line of its own products.

Under the terms of the settlement, both sides will dismiss any pending actions regarding the trademark, and agreed to "explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications."

No financial details of the settlement -- if in fact there were any -- were disclosed.

Apple plans to release its first iPhone models in June.
