San Jose, Calif. - Google will use technology developed by Audible Magic to filter out copyrighted videos on its YouTube service, The San Jose Mercury News reported, citing two sources familiar with the deal.

YouTube has received demands from numerous media firms -- including NBC, Viacom and Japan's JASRAC -- to implement such technology, and has been promising since September to do so.

Los Gatos, Calif.-based Audible Magic's filter is also used by News Corp.'s MySpace, Sony's Grouper video-sharing site, and the iMesh peer-to-peer file-sharing service.

The company's technology was also mentioned in the Supreme Court's landmark MGM v. Grokster file-sharing ruling as evidence that copyrighted content can be filtered.

Audible Magic's technology compares "digital fingerprints" of copyrighted video files in a database compiled by the company against videos uploaded to the site, and prevents clips containing copyrighted content from being posted.
