BitTorrent Debuts Legal Movie, TV Peer-to-Peer Download Service

San Francisco - BitTorrent, a provider of peer-to-peer file-sharing technology, announced on Monday the launch of a legitimate download service featuring content from 35 providers including MGM, Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount, MTV Networks and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

The BitTorrent Entertainment Network is launching with over 5,000 movie, TV show, PC game and music titles, including over 40 hours of HD programming.

The service will offer movie rentals for $3.99 (new releases) and $2.99 (catalog titles), and TV shows and music videos for download for $1.99 each.

San Francisco-based BitTorrent said most of its partners' content will be wrapped in digital rights management (DRM), to prevent copying, although a wide variety of both professional and user-generated content will also be offered for free and without DRM.

The company's main advantage over existing download services is its peer-to-peer distribution technology, which breaks large files down into small bits distributed across its network of over 135 million users -- decreasing bandwidth costs while increasing download speeds.

BitTorrent CEO Ashwin Navin told CNET News.com that a movie download on the service will arrive "faster than a pizza delivery."
