Los Angeles - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said on Wednesday that it will begin sending letters to hundreds of university computer users each month, seeking settlements of potential file-sharing copyright lawsuits, the Associated Press reported.

The RIAA sent an initial batch of letters to 400 individuals at 13 universities, containing discounted settlement offers.

"The theft of music remains unacceptably high and undermines the industry's ability to invest in new music," said RIAA chairman and CEO Mitch Bainwol.

Universities targeted with the RIAA letters included the University of Nebraska, Lincoln; Arizona State University; University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and University of Southern California.

Voluntary Payment

I believe that if there were an easy way for people to pay for their music that they had previously downloaded illegally, a way for people to donate money for their existing collection, people would actually donate money, and it could be a source of income for artists.
