Agoura Hills, Calif. - THQ said on Thursday that it has signed an exclusive worldwide agreement with Games Workshop, to license to developer's "Warhammer 40,000" franchise through 2013. The deal expands on THQ's previous agreement for consoles and handhelds, adding mobile and online rights to the titles, as well as the same rights for Games Workshops' "Gorkamorka" and "Necromunda" titles. THQ also said its Austin-based Vigil Games studio is in development on the first massively multiplayer online title based on the Warhammer franchise.

Vigil takes on 40K MMO

I really hope Vigil steers this game towards the direction of Necromunda; the closed quarters nature of the combat envisioned in that game system will offset all the problems they will face with shooting. Leave squad tactics to the RTS (DOW), and let shooty players get their kicks for nothing but ranged shooting and massive battles there. But if shooting must reign in any 40K MMO, hopefully it doesn't reign supreme. Games Workshop worked really hard to revamp the tabletop game a few years back because shooty "armies" were dominating, and they seem to have found a balance with the recent game systems. I hope that Vigil recognizes what the GW community had to go through to get this "right", and learns those lessons before setting down the foundation for this MMO. Some simple moves the right or wrong way in the early stages of development will really set the tone for this game; will you spend all your time hiding from snipers, or will axe-murderers be too powerful? Good luck, Vigil, a LOT of folks will be watching.
