San Jose, Calif. - Networking equipment maker Cisco Systems on Monday announced its acquisition of select assets of Utah Street Networks, parent company of social networking site Tribe.net.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 2003, San Francisco-based Tribe.net is now predominantly used by attendees of the annual Burning Man arts festival in the Nevada desert.

San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco said the site would remain independent, but that its underlying technology will be used to offer companies a way to build their own social networks for employees.

Cisco also recently acquired Five Across, a provider of social network building software.
