McLean, Va. - Gannett, the publisher of USA Today and 89 other daily newspapers, said on Tuesday that it will pay $73 million to acquire certain assets of Southern Connecticut Newspapers Inc. (SCNI) from rival publisher Tribune.

SCNI publishes The Advocate in Stamford and the Greenwich Time newspapers.

"Gannett has deep roots in the New York/Connecticut area and these daily newspapers are a great fit with our operations in that region," said Craig Dubow, the chairman, president and CEO of Gannett.

For several months, Gannett has been considered a potential suitor for either all or part of Tribune's assets.
