Cuban's Magnolia Pictures Subpoenas Google for YouTube User ID

Austin, Texas - Magnolia Pictures, the film distribution company co-owned by Dallas Mavericks owner and dot-com billionaire Mark Cuban, has filed for a subpoena that asks Google how it can obtain the identity of a YouTube user who has uploaded potentially infringing clips of its films to the site, CNET News.com reported.

The user in question, who goes by "halifaxion" on YouTube, has uploaded two clips to Google Video and one on YouTube.

Once identified by Google, Magnolia -- which has released films such as "Jesus Camp," "Capturing the Friedmans" and "Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room" -- will have the option to file a copyright infringement lawsuit against the video uploader.

I personally am happy to see Mark Cuban press Google on this. They have been flaunting copyright laws since they started. And, contrary to a public image as a "user-generated" site, they are really just a mass piracy site. (Shelly Palmer points this out well in his essay.) We are never going to get good, solid internet TV offerings until YouTube is cleaned up. - Robert
