Los Angeles - Time Warner's New Line Cinema has acquired the film rights to "Gears of War," the popular Xbox 360 game from developer Epic Games and publisher Microsoft Game Studios, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The game, which has sold 3 million units in 10 weeks of release, pits humans against an alien race on a foreign planet.

The project will be produced by Marty Bowen, based on a treatment crafted by screenwriter Stuart Beattie ("Collateral") in collaboration with lead game designer Cliff Bleszinski.
