Electronics Retailer Tweeter Closing 49 Stores, Cutting 20% of Jobs

Canton, Mass. - Tweeter Home Entertainment Group, specialty consumer electronics retailer, on Thursday announced that, in order to cut costs, it is closing 49 stores, two regional facilities, and exiting certain regions of the country.

"The company will close all of its stores in California, Tennessee, Alabama, New York, and most of Georgia within two to three months, resulting in layoffs of approximately 20% of its total company personnel," the company announced.

Canton, Mass.-based Tweeter said that, going forward, it plans to emphasize its home installation and services business model, as well as its "Consumer Electronics (CE) Playground" concept stores.
