Cincinnati, Ohio - Broadcast equipment maker Harris Corporation, and the U.S. arm of Korean consumer electronics firm LG, announced on Tuesday that they have partnered to develop a new mobile digital TV delivery system that will allow for reception of local stations' digital broadcast signals on cell phones, as well as car-based and other handheld devices.

LG said the service is the first to enable local TV stations to broadcast their existing signals to mobile devices.

A spokesman for Harris told Reuters it would cost stations about $100,000 to $500,000 to upgrade their existing broadcast transmitters for the system, depending on market size and number of channels offered.

The companies plan to debut the MPH (Mobile-Pedestrian-Handheld) system at the NAB convention later this month in Las Vegas.
