Washington - Angel investment groups made an average of 7.4 investments in 2006, with average total funding of $1.78 million, according to new figures released by the Angel Capital Association (ACA).

The figures are up substantially from 2005, when angels invested an average of $1.45 million in 5.5 deals.

They are also are expected to improve this year, with almost all angel groups expecting to invest in at least one new company in 2007 and 77% expecting to invest in as many as nine.

"These predictions bode well for angel group investing in 2007," said ACA chairman John May.

"Not only are angel groups funding early-stage ventures at an increased level, but many are also reserving follow-on funding for their portfolio companies to help them grow."

There are currently about 265 angel groups operating in the U.S. and Canada, an increase of 67% since 1999.
