Bangkok - Thailand has blocked YouTube from view by its citizens, after Google refused to remove a video mocking the country's beloved monarch, Reuters reported.

"Since Google has rejected our repeated requests to withdraw the clip, we can't help blocking the entire site in Thailand," Communications Minister Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom told Reuters.

"When they decide to withdraw the clip, we will withdraw the ban."

It is a crime to criticize or mock the royal family in Thailand, punishable by up to 15 years in prison; a Swiss man was sentenced to 10 years in jail last week for defacing images of the monarchy.

The YouTube clip in question, posted by a user called "paddidda," features some crude, clownish animation drawn over still pictures of King Bhumibol. It has been viewed over 40,000 times and counts nearly 500 comments.

"Be ashamed of this stupid video. King Bhumibol is an example of generosity and it is not respectful to use his image like a cartoon," wrote YouTube user "ipocondriaco."
