Silver Spring, Md. - Discovery Communications, the media company behind such cable TV channels as The Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet, may be on the verge of a major round of layoffs, according to a report by industry news magazine Broadcasting & Cable.

Citing "executives familiar with the situation," the publication reported on its website that about 300 workers from the company's retail, education and international divisions could by laid off by Monday.

The news comes six months after Discovery hired former NBC Universal executive David Zaslav as its new president and CEO.

In February, the company, which has about 4,000 employees, announced a major corporate overhaul that included the departure of five senior executives.

Broadcasting & Cable reported that analysts have criticized Discovery for spending too much in the areas of education and international programming.
