Palo Alto, Calif. - Azureus, the provider of a file-sharing program that uses the BitTorrent protocol, on Thursday announced the launch of Vuze (formerly codenamed Zudeo), a peer-to-peer service that will deliver high-definition programming from providers including the BBC and Showtime Networks.

Vuze will continue to offer user-generated and some professionally-produced shows for free, while making premium content available for a low cost.

The BBC will offer the U.S. premiere of its TV series "Sorted" on Vuze, while Showtime Networks will distribute shows including "Weeds," "Dexter" and "The L Word."

Other providers include Starz, A&E Networks, Bennett Media Worldwide, G4 and National Geographic.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Azureus claims to be the most popular peer-to-peer application, with more than 140 million downloads, available in 40 languages across 100 countries.

thoughts about vuze

what is important about vuze is that it will level the playing field so that producers and directors around the world to have a space in which they can sell their films to a global market. how many films go to festivals every year that don't land distribution deals? now these filmmakers have another method for distribution that will harness the power of the internet. youtube sucks because you can't stare at a tiny box in a living room with a group of people and more importantly youtube became valuable on the backs of the producers who created content. vuze both solves the scalability issue of delivering high res. files and the issue of content producers actually having the chance to make revenue from their work. another thing to consider is that is a human rights group uploads a video and then vuze distributes it via bit torrent, no government will be able to stop the flow of that content. now, it is easy for a central server approach such as youtube to censor content. and unlike joost, which is the servant of traditional media conglomerates (the platform is closed and only wants deals with the MTVs) vuze is open to the world. thanks for reading my ideas about this. if you are looking for some cool videos on vuze, check out my blog vuze.wordpress.com
