San Francisco - In the wake of major label EMI's decision to sell unprotected songs on iTunes and other services, Microsoft said it plans to begin selling songs for its Zune player without digital rights management (DRM) security that restricts their use, CNET News.com reported.

"We've been saying for a while that we are aware that consumers want to have unprotected content," Zune marketing director Jason Reindorp told News.com.

"It potentially makes the competition more on a device-to-device or service-to-service basis. It will force the various services to really innovate."

The company did not say when it planned to begin offering DRM-free songs from EMI and other providers.
