Los Angeles - The technology and entertainment firms that developed the AACS (Advanced Access Content System) security protecting next-generation Blu-ray and HD DVD discs have taken steps to block a breach found by hackers that allowed discs to be copied.

The AACS Licensing Administrator said it has worked with manufacturers to expire the encryption keys exposed by the security breach.

Consumers using applications including InterVideo's WinDVD -- through which copies of Blu-ray and HD DVD could me made -- are being asked to install an update that blocks the hack; those who don't install the update will no longer be able to play protected Blu-ray or HD DVD content.

The AACS LA said new movie discs will also be embedded with instructions for Blu-ray and HD DVD drives to block the hacked encryption keys.

Companies involved in developing AACS include IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Disney and Warner Bros. Studios.
