Fort Mill, S.C. - Muzak and DMX, two providers of background music and other services for businesses, announced on Friday that they are contemplating a future consolidation or combination, and have sought federal antitrust clearance for such a transaction.

The companies said the combination would be contingent on a sale of the combined entity to an as yet unidentified third party buyer, following federal approval.

Muzak's programming is piped into over 350,000 locations, for customers including Applebee's, JCPenney and McDonald's; DMX provides its services to companies such as Starwood Hotels, 24 Hour Fitness and Nike.
