Los Angeles - NBC Universal general counsel Rick Cotton has called for the creation of a Cabinet-level position to address piracy of intellectual property, Variety reported.

"Putting leadership for this in the White House will send a message that needs to be sent about the level of resources and commitment required," Cotton said at an American Bar Assn. luncheon, calling piracy "the most significant threat to the future of global economic growth and security."

An intellectual property czar already exists within the Commerce Dept., but Cotton argued that problem deserves more attention, not only in the executive branch but also from the Justice Dept., governors, mayors and corporations.
