Seoul, Korea - Korean consumer electronics firm Samsung has announced plans to introduce a dual-format player that will support both Blu-ray and HD DVD high-definition formats in time for the holidays.

The Samsung Duo HD player (BD-UP5000) will join an existing dual-format player from LG Electronics in the market, as well as a disc format from Warner Bros. due later this year called "Total HD" that will contain both Blu-ray and HD DVD versions on the same disc.

"Our main concern is not technology but consumer choice," Dongsoo Jun, executive vice president of Samsung's Digital AV Division, told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Consumers are hungry for more HD content but are currently confused about competing formats."

Jun added that Samsung, which has so far introduced several Blu-ray players, could potentially also bring an HD DVD player to market, "whenever consumers demand it."
