London - By 2012, 70% of European homes will own at least one HD-capable TV, up from 8% in 2006, according to a report from market research firm Strategy Analytics.

Sales of high-definition TV and video devices will surge 158% this year, to 28.1 million units.

Additionally, 44% of European homes will own an HDTV receiver in 2012 -- such as a set-top box or integrated digital TV -- compared to 27% with HD digital media players, 26% with HD disc players (Blu-ray, HD DVD) and 15% with HD portable devices.

"The trend toward high definition TV and video is being driven by surging demand for LCD and plasma TVs, the vast majority of which are capable of displaying HD," said Strategy Analytics' Peter King.

"Awareness of high definition is growing all the time and we expect this to feed into growing sales of Blu-ray Disc players, high definition camcorders and other HD devices."
