Toshiba: HD DVD Players First to Sell 100,000 Units in U.S.

Los Angeles - U.S. sales of standalone HD DVD players have now surpassed 100,000 units, topping sales of players in the rival Blu-ray format and making HD DVD the first format to reach the milestone, according to a report from the North American HD DVD Promotional Group.

The numbers do not figure in sales of high-definition drives for PCs, or those sold with video game consoles. A large percentage of Blu-ray units sold are included in Sony's PlayStation 3; an HD DVD drive is also offered as an add-on for Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Earlier this month, Toshiba, the lead developer of HD DVD technology, dropped the price on some of its players below $400.

"Toshiba remains committed to drive sales with strategic pricing and marketing to complement the rapid market adoption of HDTVs," said Jodi Sally, vice president of marketing, Toshiba America Consumer Products.

"Retailers are showing a significant increase in sales volume this month so far."
