Aalst, Belgium - Netlog (formerly Facebox), a provider of social networking sites across eight European countries, announced that it has raised $6.8 million in its first round of venture funding, led by Index Ventures.

Atomico, Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis -- the founders of Skype -- and Robin Klein of the Accelerator Group also participated.

Founded in 2003, Belgium-based Netlog launched a pan-European network of sites under the Facebox brand in September 2006, which now counts over 17 million users and generates 2 billion monthly page views.

The company, which derives revenue from both user payments and advertising, is already profitable.

The Netlog social network is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian and Romanian.

Netlog will use the funds to accelerate the roll-out of additional sites in more languages and territories, and to further build up its commercial operations.
