Tokyo - Japanese video game maker Nintendo, which announced a 77% year-over-year profit increase on strong sales of its Wii and DS game systems, said it plans to increase production of its Wii console in response to demand, GamesIndustry.biz reported.

"For the first three months of this year we have been producing one million hardware units per month. We are increasing the manufacturing capacity and forecast to ship 14 million in this fiscal year to our distributors and retail customers globally," a Nintendo spokesman told GamesIndustry.biz.

The company has so far sold 5.84 million Wii units worldwide, and sales in the U.S. over the past few months have topped those of the rival Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.
