What Do You Know About WiMAX?

WiMax Maybe you’ve heard the word WiMAX of late?  It’s made the rounds at nearly every technology conference this year, so one would think it’s the wave of the future.  Or not.  According to Len Lauer, Qualcomm’s EVP and group president, WiMAX is still no match for cellular networks, which provide equal bandwidth and are easier to deploy, GigaOM reported from the Wireless Innovations Conference.  This despite Qualcomm’s recent acquisition of TeleCIS’s mobile WiMAX platform.  But what is WiMAX anyway?  It sounds like super-juiced WiFi, but apparently that’s incorrect as well.  So what do you, dear DMW reader, know about WiMAX?  Is it the future?  Is it over-hyped?  Give us your thoughts…
