Santa Clara, Calif. - Vudu, the developer of a TV set-top box that aims to deliver movies directly to televisions over the Internet via a peer-to-peer network, announced on Monday that it has signed content licensing agreements with seven major Hollywood movie studios, and 15 independent and international distributors.

Expected to become available this summer for around $300, the set-top box will offer up to 5,000 films on-demand from all the studios, with the exception of Sony.

The Vudu service will compete with similar existing devices like the Akimbo player, and video-on-demand offerings from cable and satellite TV providers.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company has received funding from venture capital firms including Greylock Partners and Benchmark Capital.
