New York - About.com, a unit of The New York Times Company that publishes original content created by a network of experts and enthusiasts, announced on Monday that it has acquired ConsumerSearch.com, an online publisher of meta-reviews, for $33 million.

Founded in 2000, Washington-based ConsumerSearch helps consumers research purchases, through a network of freelance writers who analyze reviews covering 250 product categories, from multiple online and offline sources.

ConsumerSearch founder Derek Drew and the company's five other staff will join About.com.

New York-based About.com, which claims 1.6 million pieces of original content and is one of the 15 most-visited sites in the U.S., said the acquisition will expand both its library of content and advertising inventory.

Within the last eight months, the company has also acquired UCompareHealthCare.com and Calorie-Count.com.
