McLean, Va. - Microsoft said on Wednesday that it has purchased a 4% stake in online job site CareerBuilder, which is currently jointly owned by three newspaper publishers.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Publishers Gannett and Tribune will each own 40.8% of the company following the close of the deal, with McClatchy also owning 14.4%, the Associated Press reported.

In a related move, CareerBuilder has extended its three-year-old deal as the exclusive content provider to the MSN Careers channel in the U.S. through 2013, and the two sides have broadened their alliance to include key MSN international sites.

Under that deal, CareerBuilder will pay MSN up to $443 million over the course of seven years.

CareerBuilder averages more than 1.5 million job postings a month.
