Raleigh, N.C. - Attorneys General in seven states have asked News Corp.'s MySpace to turn over the names of registered sex offenders who use the service, the Associated Press reported.

The joint letter to MySpace was signed by the Attorneys General of North Carolina, Connecticut, Idaho, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania, and was prompted by what they say is new data showing that "thousands" of known registered sexual offenders have been confirmed as MySpace members.

MySpace partnered with Sentinel Tech Holding in December 2006 to check its user base against sex offender lists; while a Wired magazine investigation found 744 registered sex offenders on the site, the letter indicates that Sentinel has uncovered thousands more.

The letter also asks MySpace to provide information on how many registered sex offenders are on the site, and where they live, as well as details on how the company warns its users about sex offenders, and removes their profiles.
