New York - Major record label Warner Music Group has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against music-focused social networking site Imeem, Reuters reported.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Imeem counts 16 million users for its site, which allows users to upload and share MP3 files and playlists, but warns users not to upload copyrighted materials.

"Imeem is no innocent infringer. It invites Imeem's millions of users to flock to its website to copy, adapt, distribute and perform unlicensed sound recordings and music videos," Warner says in its lawsuit, which also cites as evidence Imeem data showing that its songs have been played "thousands" of times by Imeem users.

The lawsuit seeks up to $150,000 in damages per infringed work.
