Washington - The Carlyle Group, the large DC-based private equity firm, may be preparing to sell New York-based cable operator Insight Communications, less than two years after acquiring the company in a $2.1 billion management buyout, TheDeal.com reported.

Citing "sources in the industry," the website reported that Insight could be valued at more than $2.5 billion.

Insight last month reportedly agreed to dissolve its Midwest joint venture with Comcast in a move that will likely increase its future programming costs.

Carlyle acquired Insight in December 2005.
