Washington - The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade group for the software and digital content industry, said that it has settled a software piracy suit on behalf of member Symantec for $205,000. The organization filed suit after the defendant attempted to sell unauthorized Symantec software on eBay.

The lawsuit was among the first filed under a new SIIA program, which monitors popular online auction sites, identifies people selling pirated software and sues them on behalf of member companies.

"The sale of pirated software through online auctions is a growing problem that hurts buyers, sellers and the auction sites themselves," said Keith Kupferschmid, the senior vice president of SIIA's Software Anti-Piracy Division.

"With existing auction site tools doing little to curb the problem, SIIA has stepped up its efforts to aggressively pursue software pirates."
